A Sequel to Segregation
Letters to the Editor:
Life Magazine, January 7, 1957 Gordon Parks’ Segregation Story served as a stepping stone towards other stories he would cover for Life to bolster awareness of the Civil Rights Movement. These assignments, including a study of the Black Muslim Movement, a piece about the Black Panthers, and the documentation of a black family from Harlem living in extreme poverty, continued to depict African Americans as ordinary people rather than unrealistic stereotypes. |
The public’s strong reactions to Segregation Story led to the publication of a follow-up article in December of 1956. A Sequel to Segregation centered around the Causey family who had been driven out of Mobile, Alabama for their outspoken support of integration by a group of angry white residents. With no possessions or any way to make a living, the Causeys contacted the staff at Life, who donated $25,000 to help them relocate.
